Dr. Vic McGowan

  • Position :
    Director

I have been working in public health research for over a decade completing my PhD in Medical Anthropology in 2015 which focused on the effects of school meal legislation on child malnourishment.  My current role is focused on conducting research into inequalities in health with specific focus on community-based approaches to tackle social injustice.   I am a highly experienced mixed methods researcher having conducted many research projects and evaluations using both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

I am passionate about ensuring lived experience is at the heart of health inequalities research and policy and recently set up the Equal England Public Network which aims to increase public engagement and involvement with health inequalities research. The Network currently has around 60 members of the public representing diverse community groups from across the country who help shape our research agenda and ensure we focus on the issues that matter to them and the places where they live. I also provide training opportunities to develop research and evaluation skills to community groups as well as sharing opportunities to attend research dissemination and knowledge exchange events.

In my spare time I’m slightly obsessed with my English Bulldog Beau so spend a lot of time encouraging him to go for walks.  When I’m not wandering around woodlands with my little pudden, I’m often found foraging in antique shops and reclamation yards looking for unique items to upcycle – if they’re bulldog themed all the better!
